Toy Story 5 recounts a la rescue after a radical change in approach
Andrew Stanton and McKenna Harris paused filming for two weeks, reshaped the first act and found a new emotional purpose for Jessie that helped the film surpass one billion dollars at the global box office.

Toy Story 5 is now a global box-office success, but its path to becoming a genuine new chapter for the saga was not straightforward. During production, directors Andrew Stanton and McKenna Harris realized that the first act was not working and that the central conflict too closely resembled the 1995 original. Their solution was to stop filming for two weeks, reconsider the story and redefine what Jessie was fighting for.
When the first act stopped working
The initial version focused on a conflict between the toys and Lilypad for Bonnie's attention, a dynamic that felt too familiar and failed to generate the emotional hook the filmmakers were looking for. Instead of throwing away all the completed material, Stanton and Harris used the pause to look for a reason audiences would genuinely want to follow the characters.
“We were working on the movie, but we had a problem. It wasn't good. I didn't like it.”McKenna Harris
The turning point came when the directors focused on Bonnie's shyness. Jessie moved away from simply seeking more playtime and toward helping the girl find a friend. Harris described that decision as the fuel for the project: the new purpose gave the story an emotional direction that the previous conflict could not provide.
Harris also emphasized the importance of recognizing when something is not working and asking for help. For the director, the two-week pause was not a simple production break but the decision that brought the rest of the film together. Toy Story 5 was released in 2026 and went on to surpass one billion dollars in global box-office revenue.
